The Third Tradition

All of the Cybriety groups are closed groups of women in AA who share not only our common struggle to lead a sober life, but our experience, strength, and hope in the process. Although we meet online, we consider ourselves real AA groups and we follow the steps and traditions of AA. We are an email group of men and women, an AA group that adheres to AA’s 12 Steps, 12 Traditions, and 12 Concepts. The topic chair sends out a topic to all on Saturdays.

Weekly topic open for discussion by its members, numbering about 30. Anybody already in AA who wishes to join can send an email to the address below, giving a brief introduction regarding his or her disease and date of sobriety. If you are a newcomer to AA, please state a desire to stop drinking, along with a brief introduction of your drinking career.

Those democratic principles will also enable the members of a particular Oxford House to take pride in their new found responsibility. “An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest Problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.” And if anyone can be a drug addict, any family, even ones with spotless kitchens, playful border collies and new grandbabies, can raise them.

Turned down the gift but agreed to have a separate non-profit board run the facility composed of AA members. Bill Wilson and Marty Mann served on the High Watch board of directors for many years. High Watch was the first and therefore the oldest 12-step-based treatment center in the world still operating today. Because of the anonymous and voluntary nature of Alcoholics Anonymous (“AA”) meetings, it is difficult to perform random trials with them; the research suggests that AA can help alcoholics make positive changes. Oxford House, Inc. acts as the coordinating body for providing charters for the opening of new Oxford Houses. It also acts as the coordinating body to help individual houses to organize mutually supportive chapters.

Personal criticism or antagonistic behavior will not be tolerated. We are an audio/video meeting and feature a 15-minute speaker or topic followed by a group discussion 7 days a week.

Members should be careful not to abuse the dismissal process. Every opportunity should be given to a member who needs professional help to see that he obtains it. No Member of an Oxford House is ever asked to leave without cause—a dismissal vote by the membership because of drinking, drug using, or disruptive behavior. And an uneven, miscalculated batch, possibly in combination with a lower tolerance level created by several days of sobriety, could well have been what killed Heather. Brian and Kier Butterworth share the story of their daughter Heather, who recently died from a fentanyl overdose. Portraits of their three daughters as well as a family photograph adorn their northwest Bakersfield home. Those listed as “closed” are available to those with a self-professed “desire to stop drinking,” which cannot be challenged by another member on any grounds. At speaker meetings , one or more members who typically come in from a neighboring town’s meeting tell their stories. At Big Book meetings, the group Transitional living in attendance will take turns reading a passage from the AA Big Book and then discuss how they relate to it after. At twelve-step meetings, the group will typically break out into subgroups depending on where they are in their program and start working on the twelve steps outlined in the program.

We feel that the 40-member cap allows the group to get to know each other in a more personal way. We celebrate birthdays, laughs, and the ups and downs of sober living. There is a weekly topic for discussion, chosen by the month’s chairperson. Each group has its own officers and representative with the Online Intergroup of Alcoholic Anonymous. Roll calls are done periodically to verify membership with the group and touch base with those who have been quiet for a while. We consider New Beginnings to be more than just a meeting – we are a family. AA Serenity is a closed, women’s AA email meeting.

In fact, Oxford House creates an environment whereby each member can more fully realize the benefits available from active AA or NA membership. Not everyone is comfortable attending in person meetings right now – this is an alternative forum to enable you to share your experience, strength and hope with other alcoholics from home. This meeting was started for those in the Northeast Ohio area, but are open to anyone with a desire to stop drinking. Each week the chairperson of the meeting will choose a topic , and will give participants the opportunity to share with the group. Members may read and respond to a weekly email topic.

We use a question/answer/comment format that takes us through the Big Book paragraph by paragraph looking for the authors’ “clear cut directions” in each paragraph. The purpose of the questions is to focus attention on each sentence, or sometimes each word in a sentence.

In any case, on May 21, 2021, Heather Lyn Butterworth, a 30-year-old graduate of Bakersfield’s Centennial High School, died of a fentanyl overdose. Her body was discovered locked inside the bathroom of her apartment at The Third Tradition Sober Living, a campus of roughly 50 modest single story-units where she had lived for the previous 70 days. In that time she had progressed just well enough to inspire glimmers of hope — in her family, in her boyfriend Dan, in her caretakers — and had quite possibly saved another addict’s life along the way. But that’s opiate addiction, which teases and taunts before it delivers a verdict. With meeting conducted by email going on 24 hours a day seven days a week. Global membership with members in over 22 countries and at both poles.

Participants were assigned randomly within five treatments, including an Alcoholics Anonymous-like meeting. Later analysis says that there are “concerns with the Brandsma trial which call its experimental results into question”. The research is quite complex and is still developing; some studies have suggested an association between AA and increased abstinence or other positive outcomes, but other studies have not. Likewise, some articles in the popular press state that Alcoholics Anonymous helps some alcoholics cause of alcoholism get sober, but others claim AA is not effective. There are a number of ways one can determine whether AA works and numerous ways of measuring if AA is successful. The 2020 Cochrane review of Alcoholics Anonymous determines success as “abstinence, reduced drinking intensity, reduced alcohol-related consequences, alcohol addiction severity, and healthcare cost offsets.” More informally than not, AA’s membership has helped popularize the disease concept of alcoholism which had appeared in the eighteenth century.
